How to Build the Perfect Gang Sheet in Canva
Frequently Asked Questions
Before we dive in, here are some of the most common questions we get about gang sheets:
What is a gang sheet?
A gang sheet is a single transfer sheet that contains multiple designs packed together. Instead of ordering one design per sheet, you fill the entire sheet with as many designs as you need — making it the most cost-effective way to order DTF transfers.
What size should my gang sheet be?
Our maximum gang sheet size is 12.5" x 82". You can make it shorter if you don't need the full length, but keep the width at 12.5" to match our sheet.
Do my designs need transparent backgrounds?
Yes — always. Any white or colored background will print onto the transfer and show up on your garment. Every design must have a transparent background before you upload.
What file format should I use?
PNG with transparent background or PDF with CMYK color profile and flattened image. We'll cover both in detail below.
Can I use Canva to build my gang sheet?
Absolutely — and that's exactly what this guide is for. Let's get into it. Don't have Canva? You can create a free account and Download Canva Here.
Where do I go to upload and order my Gang Sheet?

Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas Size
The first thing you need to do is create a custom canvas in Canva at the correct dimensions. Our maximum gang sheet size is 12.5" x 82" — so start there to make sure you're working with the full available space.
To set a custom size in Canva:
- Open Canva and click Create a design
- Select Custom size
- Enter 12.5 x 82 inches
- Click Create new design

💡 Tip: If you don't need the full 82 inches, you can make the canvas shorter — just keep the width at 12.5" to match our sheet width.
Step 2: Upload Your Images
With your canvas ready, it's time to bring in your designs. In the left column of the Canva editor, click Uploads. From there, click Upload files and select the images you want to use from your computer.
Once your images have finished uploading, simply click on any image in the uploads panel to place it directly onto your canvas. You can then resize and reposition it as needed.

💡 Tip: You can upload multiple images at once to save time. They'll all appear in your Uploads panel and be ready to add to the canvas whenever you need them.
Step 3: Remove Backgrounds From Every Image
Your designs need to have transparent backgrounds before they go to print — otherwise you'll end up with a white box around each design on your transfer, which will show up on the garment.
Canva has a built-in Background Remover tool that works well for most images:
- Click on your image
- Select Edit image in the top toolbar
- Click Background Remover
- Let Canva process the image, then review the result carefully

⚠️ Heads up: Canva's background remover isn't perfect. It can sometimes clip parts of your design — especially around fine details like hair, thin text, or intricate edges. Always zoom in and double-check after removing the background. If something looks off, use the Restore brush to bring back any areas that got accidentally removed.
Step 4: Use the Measurement Tool to Check Your Sizing
As you place designs on your canvas, use Canva's built-in measurement tool to verify the width and height of each element. This is especially important if you're ordering transfers for specific garment locations — a left chest design, for example, typically shouldn't exceed 4" wide.
Click on any element and the dimensions will display in the toolbar at the top of the editor. You can also manually type in exact dimensions there to resize with precision.

💡 Tip: Think about where each design will be applied on the garment and size accordingly before you finalize your layout.
Step 5: Arrange Your Designs With Proper Spacing
Once your images are background-free and sized correctly, arrange them on the canvas. Leave at least 0.25" to 0.50" of space between each design so there's enough room to cut out each transfer cleanly without accidentally cutting into the artwork.

A few arrangement tips:
- Group similar sizes together to make cutting easier
- Rotate designs if needed to fit more onto the sheet
- Leave a small margin around the outside edges of the canvas
Step 6: Use the Duplicate Tool to Save Time
Need multiples of the same design? Don't drag and drop repeatedly — use Canva's Duplicate tool to quickly copy any element:
- Click on the design you want to duplicate
- Click the square with the plus sign to create an exact copy of the image. Place it where you'd like it.
- Press Ctrl+D (Windows) or Cmd+D (Mac), or right-click and select Duplicate
- Reposition the copy and repeat as needed
This is a huge time saver when you're filling a full sheet with repeated designs.
Step 7: Download Your Gang Sheet
When your layout is complete, it's time to export. You have two options — PNG or PDF — and each has specific settings you must get right:
PNG:
- Click Share → Download
- Select PNG as the file type
- ✅ Check the "Transparent background" box — this is critical. Without it, your design will download with a white background and won't print correctly.

PDF:
- Click Share → Download
- Select PDF Print as the file type
- ✅ Select "Flatten image"
- ✅ Set the color profile to CMYK
- For More Information on CYMK Click Here

💡 Which should I choose? PNG with transparent background is the most common and straightforward option. PDF with CMYK is a great choice if color accuracy is especially important to you — just make sure to follow both settings above.
